Charcot, Jean-Martin
(29 nov. 1825, París, Francia–16 ago. 1893, Morvan).

Profesor de medicina y clínico francés. Se le considera, junto con Guillaume Duchenne (1806–1875), el fundador de la neurología moderna. En 1882 inauguró la mayor clínica neurológica de Europa de la época. Maestro extraordinario, se hizo conocido por sus trabajos sobre la histeria y la hipnosis, que influyeron en muchos estudiantes, incluso Sigmund Freud. Describió los síntomas de la ataxia locomotora y la desintegración que provoca de los ligamentos y las superficies articulares (enfermedad de Charcot, articulación de Charcot). Fue pionero en vincular determinados sitios del encéfalo con funciones específicas y descubrió los aneurismas miliares cerebrales.
